The Internet Is Still Wide Open

Image
Nearly 2 million years ago, we figured out how to turn a boring old lump of rock into a tool. Quite an astonishing feat of brain power. As a result, rather than tearing off meat with our hands we could slice up some very nice t-bone steaks. We somehow also knew cooked meat was not just tastier, but better for us. We also figured out that the more of our kind we shared this information with, the better our chances for survival. Our distant ancestors knew there was safety in numbers. So we evolved methods of communication; language, cave drawings. Arriving to where we are today with the single biggest, most complex communication technology we’ve ever built; the internet. Some will say that the original idea of the internet, to be a free, wide open space for ideas and innovations has gone the way of the DoDo bird. Extinct. Not really. What has changed is the evolution of the internet. It was largely open and wild, the domain of the hippies who grew tired of communes and a lack of proper s

Technology’s Evolution Was Messy

Image
We like to think there’s been one nice, continuous, linear direction in the development of technologies. We turned silica stone into an axe and then it was all one long train of events to when we turned silica stone into microchips. It wasn’t at all that way. It was in fact, quite messy, with lots of fits and starts. Sometimes technologies would just be lost. Whoever invented it had a heart attack before it was finished and no one else came along and re-invented whatever that idea was. We’ve just discovered technology made by our non Homo sapiens ancestors that are little balls. Unless we invent a time machine, we will never know why or what they were used for. The tool exists, the context is gone. We like to think agriculture and all its related tools happened one day when we got tired of bashing around the woods fighting the bears for berries. It took several thousands of years and some cultures decided they rather enjoyed fighting the bears rather than growing the berries and aban

Introduction to Networking Series Navigating Network Protocols | Networking Fundamentals

Image
Welcome to the sixth installment of our Introduction to Networking Series. In this article, we’ll dive into the world of network protocols, demystifying their role in facilitating communication between devices on the internet. Whether you’re a tech enthusiast or a casual user, understanding network protocols is essential for making the most of your online experience. Network Protocols: The Digital Language of the Internet Imagine the internet as a global gathering of people who speak different languages. Network protocols are like interpreters who ensure seamless communication among these diverse participants. They define the rules and conventions that devices use to exchange information. Let’s explore network protocols through practical examples: HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol): Practical Analogy: Think of HTTP as a conversation protocol used by your web browser when you request a webpage. When you type a URL and hit Enter, your browser sends an HTTP request to the web server, whic

The meeting between technology and music

Image
The technology of music is intertwined with modern history because since humans began to invent instruments, they also invented musical instruments. But in the last 20 years, technology and music have come together in new ways, changing how people create, share, and consume music. One of the technological innovations has penetrated our home in recent years and turned it into a smarter home than ever in such a way that it knows what music you want to hear and can even create melodies that dictate body movements. Many artists argue that the technology of recent years is a double-edged sword, both from the artist’s and the listener’s perspective, and in many ways, has destroyed music as we know it. They are right. Since humanity got to know the compact disc, which to some extent replaced the vinyl record and cassettes, we hear music in a compressed version, different from what the artist intended. It worsens when you listen to a song in MP3 format through a cell phone and poor-quality h

In Memoriam: John Warnock (1940–2023)

Image
I draw, I paint, I studied geometry, I’m a mathematician. I’ve never separated my visual world and the world of mathematics. — John Warnock The Adobe Corporation has announced that cofounder John Warnock died at the age of 82 on August 19, 2023. His death will be a loss to many, most of all his closely knit family, but extending as well to many professional colleagues and, indeed, to us at the Computer History Museum. Among his many interests, Warnock was engaged with history. He collected books from across the history of science, technology, and mathematics. He donated artifacts and documents from the history of Adobe to CHM, where he became a fellow in 2002, participated in our workshop on the history of desktop publishing in 2017, and was instrumental in facilitating our recent public release of the PostScript source code. Indeed, we were working with Warnock to finalize our two-part oral history interview with him when we received the news of his passing. We could think of no bett

Image
As the world eagerly awaits the release of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro, it’s hard not to feel a twinge of sympathy for iPhone users. In a market overflowing with innovation, it seems like Apple is still playing catch-up in some critical areas. Let’s dive into what the new iPhones bring to the table and why it might be time for Apple aficionados to consider a change. The Action Button: A Not-So-New Feature One of the headline features of the iPhone 15 Pro is the introduction of an “action button” to replace the age-old mute switch. Apple seems to be touting this as a revolutionary addition, but Android users have been enjoying this functionality for years. With the power button double-press shortcut, Android users can effortlessly launch the camera or customize it to perform various tasks. Long-pressing offers even more versatility. Apple’s step in this direction is undoubtedly welcome, but it’s hardly groundbreaking. Zooming In: A Lagging Optical Zoom Apple’s decision to include a

When it comes to choosing my daily-drive smartphone, I get extremely picky because nowadays your phone is essential in doing and completing day-to-day or work-related tasks. Here is why I chose to daily the latest budget phone from Google. Smartphones I used before I had used both a Samsung and an iPhone prior to getting the Google Pixel, and my experience with them was mixed. Using the Samsung galaxy A51 The Galaxy A51 was the phone that skyrocketed my interest in smart devices. At first, it was amazing to use it. A large gorgeous display, good battery life, and a decent camera. It was my first phone to have an ultrawide camera, which is what really got me hooked onto taking pleasant pictures. However, it was an extremely slow phone — if you do just a bit of multitasking, expect it to throttle quite a lot. I know what you are going to say about how I need to try the flagship S lineup, but we cannot forget that they are almost $1,000 compared to the Pixel’s price. So I wanted something

Smartphone scourge How Covid got kids hooked

Image
2020 changed life as we know it, the entire world held to ransom by a mutating virus. Overnight, people shut themselves in. Work-from-home and online classes kept us afloat. However, it is now that we can realize the full impact of the pandemic on young minds. Every other household has fallen prey to it. Yes, we are talking about mobile addiction among tweens and teens. Considered a necessary evil during the pandemic, most parents who eagerly handed over cellphones to their impressionable kids “for studies” are now wringing their hands in despair as to how to wean their wards off the gadgets. Now, even though schools are functioning in offline mode, children often interact with their friends over phones, creating Whatsapp groups where they often engage in silly banter, send stickers and emojis or in serious cases even in cyber bullying. Common excuses for using the phone include the need to talk to friends to discuss school projects. A FINE BALANCE While the easy answer would be to con

I finally beat my addiction in under 29 days

Image
9 years. That is the least time I precisely remember being a screen addict. And I’m just 22 now. 😐 Be it mobile games, games in computer, games in console, movies, social media or browsing trash on YouTube. I’m guilty of it all. So much so that my eyesight fell straight to -4 in a span of nearly 4 years. 😥 I now realize how many potential opportunities I’ve already lost due to my weak eyesight. And the many more I know I’d have to let slip outta my hands in future. This might make it seem that I’m kinda blind. No, I’m not. I actually look pretty smart with glasses. But think about who would enjoy better on a beach . Someone free to run and dive into the soothing waters, or someone like me who would have to constantly worry about his eyes falling out at any time. 😖 Yeah! Now you know. I’ve kinda diverted from the topic but this was necessary to tell you the smallest of problems you can get from unnecessary involvement with screens. Now what you’re here to get.
