Generative AI Hype Explained

This question came up in many of the sessions on Day 1 of Google Cloud Next. Here’s a collation of all the answers that were shared during 2 talks by Amit Zavery, Helene Ambiana, Thomas Kurian, Asheem Chandna, Ravi Mahtre, Sarah Wang, James Kalani Lee

1. Accessibility

Simple apps like DALL-E and ChatGPT have made interacting with generative AI accessible to the public in an unprecedented way. User adoption happened at a record pace.

2. Demand drivers

Business needs for automation, creativity augmentation, and cost savings have made GenAI apps “hot”.

3. Algorithm innovations

Architectures like transformers, attention mechanisms, and reinforcement learning have allowed breakthroughs in generative modelling.

4. Compute power

The exponential increase in compute resources, GPUs, and cloud infrastructure has enabled the training of complex generative models that were infeasible before. (PS. The compute power is costly, not everyone can afford to pre-train LLMs)

5. Data availability

Vast amounts of data from sources like social media, internet usage, and digitization of information have provided the raw material to train powerful generative models.

In summary, the stars have aligned in terms of data, compute power, algorithms, business demand and accessibility — creating the perfect conditions for the generative AI revolution happening today.

The hype is justified given the immense possibilities these technologies are starting to unlock.

What is App transport security(ATS)? App transport security improves user security and privacy by making secure connections to network. When we try to make network requests, a console error has been printed. App Transport Security has blocked a cleartext HTTP connection since  it is insecure. Use HTTPS instead or add Exception Domains to your  app's Info.plist. It indicates that ATS is blocking insecure connections. You must use HTTPS in the URL to make secure connections or update the Info.plist file with a key that grants a temporary exemption. How I write responses that provide value

Now that you’ve got the value upfront, lend me four minutes to explain why I try to leave valuable responses, and how I got to my cheat sheet. Why leave responses? I can’t claim to know how Medium’s algorithm works. But I can claim this from first-hand experience. Your articles won’t surface much when you're new. That’s completely fair, you have no proof that you’re good, but it does make growth slow. To combat this, you have to push your content proactively. Shout, wave your arms — let them know you exist. Engaging with others is how you grow a wider audience. On Medium, there is one way to engage. Leave responses. If you leave a good comment on a big author’s story, it will rise to the top of their response section and act as an advert for you and your work.
